The Bermuda Challenge

“The Bermuda Challenge” is as the title suggests, an endurance trial set for powerboats to travel from New York to Bermuda, some 673nm (774 miles) in the shortest time possible. This is not a competition in which many boats compete together side by side, but a challenge which needs many months of preparation and organisation, not least because the event normally takes place in the summer months where the weather conditions are unpredictable.

image

The current record time is held by Chris Fertig, who recently managed to beat the existing record achieved in 2002, shaving 44 minutes off the time. The challenge was completed in just under 22 hours, no small feat for a powerboat on the open sea.

Fabio Buzzi from FB Designs is a well-known and respected boat builder based in Italy. FB Designs build high speed interceptor boats for military and civilian coast guard use. ITW Plexus has been supplying FB Design with structural adhesives to use on various applications on the vessel, allowing Eng. Buzzi and his design team to develop revolutionary concepts in boat building.

The Bermuda Challenge started last night in New York at 17:00 with Eng Buzzi predicated to arrive in Bermuda app. 19:00 this evening smashing the existing record, with an average speed of 48 Knots (55 mph or 88 kph).

You can track the team’s progress at http://fbdesign.it/record.php

Reporting from the Innotrans Exhibition

Hello to everyone from the Innotrans exhibition. This is my first blog post, and for those of you who I have yet to meet, I am Thorsten Petersen the newly appointed Territory Sales Manager for Germany and Switzerland.

Day three of the show and today Sally Sinai (Product Manager) and I approached the big unions of Railway suppliers and Railway companies in Europe. The objective is to build a relationship with these associations with a view to being involved in their design process. Also introduced ourselves to various composite, interior, carpet and head light manufacturers.
image

My summary from the biggest rail show is that in future we should be present here with a coordinated ITW stand including MRO, Fasteners and Automotive, demonstrating our wide range of competence.

Closing with the sentence of today: “There are no problems, there are only projects.”

Good bye from Berlin for now.

ITW Plexus exhibit at Innotrans 2012 in Hall 2.2, Stand no. 215/L

ITW Plexus will be exhibiting for the first time at the Innotrans exhibition in Berlin, sharing space on the UK Trade and Investment stand.

Sally Sinai (Product Manager) and Thorsten Peterson (Territory Sales Manager) will be present throughout the show to discuss the benefits and savings ITW Plexus structural adhesive technologies can offer manufacturers and suppliers into the rail industry.

For those not familiar with ITW Plexus, we have been supplying into the Rail Industry for a number of years, and have worked with manufacturers on applications such as bonding floors, roof fairings, cab mouldings, draught screens and stand backs amongst many others. What’s more, our adhesives are used not only to speed up production, reduce component weight and increase durability but to also achieve aerodynamic efficiency and improve the aesthetic finish of the component.

So, if you’re planning on a visit, be sure to stop by our stand and see Sally & Thorsten.

ITW Plexus Structural Adhesives workshop at JCB

The second stop in the ITW Plexus workshop tour (UK) was at one of the world’s largest construction equipment manufacturer’s – JCB. The workshops started at the JCB Cab Systems site and then moved on to the JCB World Headquarters.

The workshops are designed to give employees from different departments the opportunity to learn and ask questions on the benefits of using Methacrylate structural adhesives and the impact they have on production and business, as well as discussing surface preparation and bonding in practice.

The workshop was managed by Chris Coll (Territory Manager – UK & Ireland) and assisted by myself. The adhesive workshop received an enthusiastic response from its visitors, with the bonded samples and the infra red camera housing once again proving to be of great interest.

ITW Plexus Structural Adhesives Workshop

ITW Plexus Structural Adhesives Workshop at Leyland Trucks.

The first Structural Adhesives Workshop of 2010 was held at Leyland Trucks on Friday 23rd April. The event was hailed a success by all who took part. The open forum format enabled people from all different departments to share ideas and ask questions on the use of adhesives. Chris Coll (Territory Manager - UK & Ireland) and Sally Sinai (Technical Support Manager) fielded the questions on the day while a wide variety of engineers tried to break the samples and figure out what the infra red camera housing, brought as a demonstration, actually was.

JEC 2010 Review

JEC is one of the eagerly awaited exhibitions in the composites industry with hundreds of companies globally exhibiting. The exhibition did seem quieter than last year. This could be put that down to the effects of the recession or that many of the Resin manufacturers did not attend as they did in 2009.

Overall a good show, demonstrating different applications within the composite industry, some of which can be seen below.

On arrival we found ourselves being drawn to the Lamborghini. Italy was the honorary country so Lamborghini had the Tevatron on display.

Having spent most of the day visiting the stands, we did come across some interesting applications using composites in particular the soccer shoes, manufactured using Tepex by Bond Laminates.

As always, the Innovation showcase had on display some impressive applications, a few of them include;

Composite Chassis Carbon Safety cell for a race car by Sora Composites

Mountain spring on a conventional mountaineering boot, a binding for turning and an ultra light carbon ski used by famous Skiers and Alpinist, by Alp Control

                      Composite Kayak by Kiln

It’s the one time of the year in which the majority of our distributors gather at one place. It was a pleasure to have met them all and reflected on what was happening in the marketplace and to discuss the show.

Although the volcanic ash is playing havoc with travel plans we hope you had a safe journey back.

ITW Plexus will be exhibiting at the JEC in 2011, so hope to see you then.

NCS Resins Four Cities Tour

Once Kevin Lacey (Western Europe and ROW Manager) managed to arrive to a hot South Africa (30oC) we got started. Apparently the M25 was congested, causing him to miss his flight. The M25 (for those that do not know) is a UK motorway as Kevin tried explaining to us South Africans who travel on sand roads.  grin

The joint NCS Resins and ITW Plexus four cities tour kick started in Johannesburg last week at the 5-star Silver Start Casino.

The three hour workshop had a great reception with over 40 in attendance. The workshop began with a presentation from Kevin Lacey about himself and the business. Kevin then continued with my team discussing the benefits of Plexus structural adhesives, how they can improve manufacturing processes, reviewing and advising on application techniques as well as a practical demonstration giving customers the opportunity to bond different substrates.

The visitors enjoyed the opportunity to discuss the use of adhesives and existing customer’s found it helpful to know how they can further improve production techniques.

The tour continued during the week to Cape Town, Port Elizabeth finishing in Durban on Monday 15th. Judging by the number of enquiries we have already received the tour was a great success.

ITW Plexus European Championship

The ITW Plexus European Championship rolled into Shannon last week. A sensational advert for the beautiful game, although maybe not for the purist’s. If ever goal line technology was required, it would have made no difference here and therefore saved a few quid (or Euro’s).

Forget South Africa, Shannon was the centre of the football world last Tuesday night (and most of Wednesday morning in the world of Paul Wright). Teams were drawn out of a hat to ensure a degree of fairness and Frank’s approval.

A mix of nations on each team ensured a good blend of football styles for the first 10 minutes, and then coughing and spluttering in a mix of languages for the remaining 50 minutes. Team Wright raced into a 7-1 lead in the first 20 minutes aided mainly by 2 players with good fitness and a resolute refusal to defend from Team Coll. The deficit was slowly clawed back through the rest of the game, despite Tomek’s preoccupation with kicking Mike Howard again, but time ran out and Team Wright were triumphant, and smug.

A fantastic evening’s football, good, robust play from both sides, and a sure recipe for revenge the next time around.

It’s a wrap. Another successful show for ITW Plexus and Vaber Industriale Spa

By now you should be familiar with the show, if you’ve been reading my posts. Seatec, the largest marine show in Italy certainly provided suppliers with the platform to display and demonstrate their product offering. Everything you need, from boat designing software, manufacturing materials to furnishings were on show.

Over the course of the three days, our stand saw a large number of people taking a look, conversing with the team about applications, looking at products and moving on. However, it did mean we were able to address the needs of existing customers and seek the solutions to the manufacturing challenges presented by prospects.

The show ended on a high. I was invited to the Champagne reception at the British Marine Federation (BMF) stand. Accompanied by Simonette Pegorari (Italian representative of the BMF), the evening was enjoyed by all whilst discussing the challenges facing the Marine Industry and the success of the show, as well as drinking (not a lot) of champagne.

On that note, ciao from Massa Cararra. See you next year.

Day Two: Seatec ‘10

The Seatec show is now in the full swing of things.

During the show I met with many visitors who enquired about our products, the benefits of using structural adhesives and the ways of improving production processes. The new MA685 transparent adhesive was of particular interest due to its transparent bondline and working and fixture times.

I also had my 5 minutes of fame earlier. I was interviewed on camera about my thoughts on the exhibition, the economy and it’s affect on the Marine Industry. Interestingly, throughout the day my conversations with visitors confirmed my view. Although 2009 was tough for the Marine Industry, 2010 appears to have begun with a positive start. Many visitors discussed at length a number of new and interesting projects they have on the horizon.

As this is my 3rd Seatec show, I can definitely say I haven’t seen it as busy before. This if you’re wondering, is not as great for my coffee machine as visitors are coming back for seconds. I think I should start charging.

Seatec ‘10 with ITW Plexus & Vaber Industriale Spa

I arrive at the Seatec show in Italy, in preparation for a hectic few days, almost 1 day into the show and it certainly doesn’t disappoint. Passing through reception was a task, for some reason ‘pre-registering’ is a concept not quite caught on by all.

Spread over 6 halls the Seatec show is impressive, bringing together the best in design, technology and equipment under one roof. We’re here with Vaber Industriale Spa (our Italian distributor) and located in the composite hall. Having had a good look around, it appears all the major suppliers into the marine industry are present. With every one in tow, the audience will certainly be looking for new ideas and new ways of improving production.

image

The coffee machine appears to be a great hit… perhaps we should have set-up a catering stall. We have been inundated with vistors wanting coffee. Of course, I put this down to people taking a genuine interest in our products and hospitality (not just the coffee).

image
It maybe small but delivers a great taste

As part of the event we have presented the Sta-put range of canister adhesives. The range has certainly sparked an interest amongst the many visitors.

We hope you’ll come to the Vaber stand where Alberto and I will be waiting to answer your questions.
